The Tamil Nadu government issued a proposed decision on 31/12/2024, 

 

Othakadai and 16 panchayats are part of Madurai Corporation limits to improve infrastructure, manage waste, and support population growth.


Approval and Expansion:

  • The Tamil Nadu government approved the expansion of Madurai Corporation by merging 16 village panchayats and one town panchayat within the Madurai district.
  • Yanaimalai Othakadai Madurai will join the Madurai Corporation limits from January 2025.
  • The area will expand from 147.99 sq. km to 237.99 sq. km.
  • Population expected to increase from 18.5 lakhs to approximately 20 lakhs.

Regions Included:

  • 16 Village Panchayats: Othakadai, Narasingam, Kaathakinaru, Arumbanur (part), Kodikulam (part), Chettikulam, Kovilpapakudi, Alathur, Pechikulam, Viraganur, Nagamalai Pudukottai, Karadipatti, Erkudi Achampathu, Thuvariman, Perungudi.
  • 1 Town Panchayat: Paravai Municipality.

Reason for Expansion:

  • Densely Populated Suburban Areas: These regions face ongoing challenges in solid waste management and drainage infrastructure.
  • Planned Development: Integration aims to provide enhanced infrastructure, better solid waste management, and efficient liquid waste disposal.

Timeline:

  • The new boundaries are expected to be finalized before the rural local body elections, with the current term ending on January 5.
 
 

TN Government Plans for Upgrading Urban Infrastructure

 

Urban Population Growth:

  • As per the 2011 Census, Tamil Nadu’s urban population was 48.46%.
  • By 2021, it is estimated to have increased to approximately 53%.

High-Level Committee:

  • Formed under the leadership of the Additional Chief Secretary (Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department) and Principal Secretary (Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department).

Tasks include:

  • Reorganization of rural and urban local bodies.
  • Boundary expansion and creation of new local bodies.

Consultations and Proposals:

  • Extensive discussions with stakeholders, including elected representatives and officials.
  • Final consultations were held with 28 district collectors on December 18, 2024.
  • Proposals received from 16 districts: Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Erode, Karur, Hosur, Madurai, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruppur, Avadi, Greater Chennai Corporation, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Thoothukudi, and Sivakasi.
