Is the Madurai Othakadai Metro project cancelled?
The Madurai Othakadai Metro project has not been described as permanently cancelled, but it is not approved. The Centre returned the detailed project report (DPR) in November 2025 and rejected it again in July 2026. There is no confirmed approval or construction schedule.
- November 2025: the Union Government returned the Coimbatore and Madurai DPRs because the 2011 Census population is below the 20-lakh requirement. Tamil Nadu’s metro company said only clarifications had been sought

The Union Government’s main stated reason in November 2025 was population: the Metro Rail Policy 2017 asks for 20 lakh or more, and the 2011 Census figures cited were about 15.84 lakh for Coimbatore and about 15 lakh for Madurai.
